My geek side is coming through today. I love God, and I deeply appreciate science. Today I was thinking about sine waves, and ‘tuning-in’ to God. Here is s little lesson that is a fun illustration about tuning in.
A sound is a vibration in the air, that can be represented and visualized on an oscilloscope as a sine wave. Similar waves or sounds, at the same frequency, will result in an amplified, clear tone.
Multiple waves with opposing amplitudes can cancel each other out.
When waves of different frequency and amplitude are mixed together, you get a noisy signal.
A number of times, I have noticed that my favorite Christian radio station can fade in and out, based on the physical geography that I am driving through. I cannot tune the station any better. All I can do is strive to hear the voice on the radio and discern what is being said. At other times, the tuning button on the radio has been bumped, and I need to rescan to reset the airwaves to a good signal.
I am quite aware that life presents similar challenges in my relationship with God. Sometimes God seems far away or silent. Sometimes I just get so overcome by the world and its issues, that I cannot hear the voice of God. There are a lot of similarities to the radio tuning situation. There can be circumstantial obstacles and interference that can cause the presence of God to disappear.
Regardless of what I am going through, God is there. The question is — can I hear Him through the noise.
If I am with other Christians in worship, I am strengthened and encouraged.
If I am going through circumstances that really interfere with my relationship with God, I may not hear God. I have to quiet my soul, ignore the circumstance, and focus on God. Once I eliminate the interference, God will be heard.
Psalm 37:7
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
